Meta ad sizes in 2026 come down to two shapes for image ads: 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 pixels for Facebook and Instagram Feed, and 9:16 at 1440 × 2560 pixels for Stories and Reels. The 9:16 versions carry a safe zone that keeps text and logos away from the top, bottom and sides. Design one ad with its message already inside that zone and every other size becomes a canvas extension, not a redesign.

## Key takeaways

- Feed image ads on Facebook and Instagram: 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 px, JPG or PNG, up to 30MB, per Meta's Ads Guide.
- Stories and Reels: 9:16 at 1440 × 2560 px, with roughly 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% per side kept free of text.
- Headline limits differ by placement: 27 characters in Facebook Feed, 40 in Instagram Feed and Facebook Stories.
- Extended to 9:16 with 358 px added on top, only a 4:5 ad's top 1,306 px land in the safe band.
- Localized versions need the same safe-zone check, because translated copy can wrap onto extra lines.

## Meta ad sizes for every image placement (October 2026)

Meta's Ads Guide recommends 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 pixels for Feed and 9:16 at 1440 × 2560 pixels for Stories and Reels, in JPG or PNG [[1]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/facebook-feed/link-clicks). The table lists every image placement Meta still documents, with the safe zone each spec page gives, as of October 2026. The Stories and Reels numbers repeat across the pages for Instagram Stories [[5]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/instagram-story), Facebook Stories [[6]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/facebook-story), Facebook Reels [[7]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/facebook-facebook-reels) and Instagram Reels [[8]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/instagram-reels); Right Column is a desktop-only square slot [[9]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/facebook-right-hand-column). Video ads follow separate length and audio rules, covered in our [guide to AI product videos for TikTok and Meta](/learn/ai-product-videos-tiktok-meta-ads).

| Placement | Ratio | Recommended size | Keep text and logos out of |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Facebook Feed | 4:5 | 1440 × 1800 px | No fixed margin published; check the preview |
| Instagram Feed | 4:5 (1:1 also supported) | 1440 × 1800 px | Bottom and side edges |
| Facebook Stories | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 px | Top 14%, bottom 35%, 6% each side |
| Instagram Stories | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 px | Top 14%, bottom 35%, 6% each side |
| Facebook Reels | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 px | Top 14%, bottom 35%, 6% each side |
| Instagram Reels | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 px | Top 14%, bottom 35%, 6% each side |
| Facebook Right Column (desktop only) | 1:1 | At least 1080 × 1080 px | Meta advises no text on the image |

### Text and file limits

Primary text and headline are the fields Meta shows around the image, not words inside it. Their recommended lengths change by placement, so one headline reused everywhere has to fit the tightest slot.

| Placement | Primary text | Headline | Minimum width | Max file size |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Facebook Feed | 50–150 characters | 27 characters | 600 px | 30MB |
| Instagram Feed | 125 characters | 40 characters | 500 px | 30MB |
| Facebook Stories | 125 characters | 40 characters | 500 px | 30MB |
| Instagram Stories | 125 characters | Not listed | 500 px | 30MB |
| Facebook Reels | 40 characters | 55 characters | 600 px | 30MB |
| Instagram Reels | 44 characters | Not listed | 500 px | 30MB |
| Facebook Right Column | Not listed | 40 characters | 254 px | Not listed |

Meta also sets an aspect-ratio tolerance: 3% on Facebook Feed and Facebook Reels, 1% on Instagram Feed, Stories and Reels. A file that is nearly 4:5 can pass on Facebook and miss on Instagram, so export at the exact pixel size.

### Where Meta's own pages disagree

The Business Help Center says 4:5 is recommended for single-image ads in Facebook Feed and 1:1 for Instagram Feed, while noting both ratios are supported in Feed [[2]](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/103816146375741). The Ads Guide page for Instagram Feed lists 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 [[3]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/instagram-feed). Go with 4:5: it fills more of a phone screen and one file then serves both feeds. Keep a 1:1 only for carousels, where Meta recommends one consistent ratio across every card.

## Safe zones for Stories, Reels and Feed

The safe zone is the part of the frame Meta's interface never covers or crops – the profile icon and the call-to-action button sit outside it [[4]](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/980593475366490). For every 9:16 image placement, Meta's spec pages ask you to leave "roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% on each side" free of text, logos and key creative elements [[5]](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/instagram-story).

On a 1440 × 2560 canvas that works out to:

- **Top:** 358 px of background only
- **Bottom:** 896 px of background only
- **Sides:** 86 px each

What remains is a band about 1,267 px wide and 1,306 px tall, running from 14% to 65% of the height. Headline, logo, product, offer and any face in the frame all have to fit inside it.

### Feed, disclaimers and tall phones

For Instagram Feed ads in 1:1 or 4:5, Meta asks only that the bottom and side edges stay clear [[4]](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/980593475366490). The same page adds two rules that catch people out. A Reels ad carrying a disclaimer should leave the bottom 40% free, not 35%. And on phones taller than 9:16, Meta may zoom the creative to fill the screen, which crops whatever sits outside the safe zone.

Ads Manager has a **Safe zone guardrail** toggle that draws the zone as a yellow overlay on your creative. Turn it on before you approve any 9:16.

**Pro Tip**

Check the safe zone on the version with the translated copy too. A headline that fit in English can wrap to a third line in German and drop into the bottom 35%.

## Adapt one ad instead of designing five

Cover every Meta placement with one master ad and versions derived in a fixed order: design at 4:5, extend the canvas to 9:16, recompose only what does not fit, and crop last. A crop is the one operation that can delete a word of your headline.

Skip this and Ads Manager fills the missing ratios itself, with padding, media expansion, cropping and AI-enabled options. Meta's own advice is to upload your own variations when possible and to review auto-generated crops so important content isn't cut off [[2]](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/103816146375741).

### Extend first, recompose second

Extension adds background around the original pixels and leaves every letter untouched. Arithmetic decides whether it is enough. Extending a 1440 × 1800 feed ad to 1440 × 2560 adds 760 px; put 358 above and 402 below and the top 1,306 px of the original land inside the 9:16 safe band. Anything in its bottom 494 px – roughly the lowest quarter of the 4:5 – ends up where Meta's interface sits.

So a price badge in the bottom corner or a logo on the bottom edge means a recompose: copy and logo move up into the band while the background stays continuous. That is a redraw: compare it word for word against the master.

### Market versions follow the same rules

A localized ad is the same ad with translated copy and, sometimes, a local model or setting. Each text block keeps its anchor and stays inside the safe band; brand names and URLs stay exactly as printed; prices stay as they are unless you have the local figures. Right-to-left languages change reading direction, not the layout, so a block anchored left stays left. For layouts worth adapting, start with the [ad inspiration guide](/learn/ad-inspiration-ecommerce-brands) or the [Facebook Ad Library alternatives](/learn/facebook-ad-library-alternatives).

## Turn one ad into every placement and market with Kive Skills

Kive Skills are ready-made workflows the Kive agent runs for one specific job, from marketplace listing sets to localized ads. Describe the job and the agent picks the Skill. Four of them follow the order above, and a skill can hand off to the next one when the job changes shape (more on what a [creative AI agent](/learn/creative-ai-agent-ecommerce) does that a single image generator does not). Each step produces image files.

### From one product to a Meta-ready, localized set

**Make the ad with Ad Creative**

[Ad Creative](https://kive.ai/skills/ad-creative) builds the headline, logo and offer into the artwork. It asks only what your brief leaves open: the exact words, where the ad runs (4:5 feed, 9:16 Story or Reel, 1:1 or 2:3 print) and the look. Your copy is printed verbatim, and without a brand name or logo from you, none appears – no invented wordmark, price or claim. A reference ad you like can be [recreated with your own product](/learn/recreate-ad-with-your-own-product).

**Adapt it for Feed, Stories and Reels with Meta Ad Formats**

[Meta Ad Formats](https://kive.ai/skills/meta-ad-formats) takes the finished ad and returns 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16 versions, or only the ones you name. It extends the canvas when the content can stay as made and recomposes from the original when it cannot, with the copy kept word for word. Its safe band mirrors Meta's: 6–94% of width and height for 1:1 and 4:5, and 14–65% of the height for 9:16. Every version is checked against the original, and if one fails it asks before spending on a repair.

**Add more sizes with Variations & Formats**

[Variations & Formats](https://kive.ai/skills/variations) is the plain resize for an approved image: 16:9 for a banner, 1:1 for a catalog, a second size pass. It only extends the canvas – no crop, no shrinking the product, no new text – so the content stays untouched. It never moves copy into a safe zone. To do a single extension by hand, see the [extend canvas docs](https://kive.ai/docs/editing-tools/extend-canvas).

**Make the market version with Localize for Market**

[Localize for Market](https://kive.ai/skills/localize) re-cuts the same ad for another country. Name the markets and it asks what should change: the text, the people, what they wear or the surroundings. You confirm the translations before anything renders. Brand names and URLs stay exactly as printed, prices stay as they are unless you supply local ones, and risky lines get flagged per market. The product is never redrawn, every version starts from the original ad, and a founder or ambassador in the frame is never recast.

### Who this does not fit

The skills work on still images, so video ads need the video workflow linked above. And if a designer already keeps layered brand templates, resizing there preserves editable text, which a generated image does not.

There is no separate fee per skill: you pay credits for the images generated, and 1,000 credits cover about 100 image generations. The skill pages also run free image demos without an account, two runs a day across all skills.

## Check every file before upload

Run every version through the same six checks before it leaves your desk.

- **Exact pixels:** 1440 × 1800 for 4:5, 1440 × 2560 for 9:16. Instagram tolerates only a 1% ratio deviation.
- **Safe band:** every word, logo, call to action and face sits between 14% and 65% of the height on a 9:16, with nothing in the bottom 35%.
- **Copy match:** the text matches the master letter for letter, especially after a recompose or a translation.
- **Headline field:** at most 27 characters if one headline runs in Facebook Feed alongside other placements.
- **File:** JPG or PNG, under 30MB.
- **Auto variants:** open the aspect ratios view in Ads Manager, check every variant Meta generated for ratios you did not supply, and opt out of any you would not approve.

---

The specs fit on one card: 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 for Feed, 9:16 at 1440 × 2560 for Stories and Reels, and a middle band from 14% to 65% of the height where the message lives. Recheck them against Meta's Ads Guide before every big campaign.

The work is in the order, not the numbers. Make one ad whose essentials already sit where the 9:16 band will be, extend it, recompose only what does not fit, then translate. Marketplace listing photos follow different rules, covered in the [Etsy listing photo size guide](/learn/etsy-listing-photo-size).

## FAQ

### What is the best image size for Meta ads in 2026?

For Facebook and Instagram Feed, use 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 pixels, which Meta's Ads Guide lists for both feeds as of October 2026. For Stories and Reels, use 9:16 at 1440 × 2560 pixels. Export JPG or PNG under 30MB and keep text and logos inside each version's safe zone.

### What size is a Reels or Stories ad on Facebook and Instagram?

Reels and Stories image ads are 9:16 at a recommended 1440 × 2560 pixels on both Facebook and Instagram. Keep roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side free of text and logos. That leaves a band of about 1,267 × 1,306 pixels for the headline, product and offer.

### What is the safe zone in Meta ads?

The safe zone is the part of an ad that Meta's interface, such as the profile icon or the call-to-action button, will not cover or crop. For 9:16 placements it excludes about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% per side. Ads Manager's Safe zone guardrail shows it as a yellow overlay.

### Can one image work for every Meta placement?

One upload will run, because Ads Manager fills missing ratios with padding, media expansion, cropping or AI options. Meta still advises uploading your own variations for the most control. The practical minimum is two files built from the same master ad: a 4:5 for Feed and a 9:16 for Stories and Reels.

### How do I localize a Meta ad for another country?

Keep the layout and the product, and change the copy and, where it matters, the model or setting. Confirm translations before rendering, keep brand names, URLs and prices as printed, and recheck the safe zone, since a translated line can need more room. Kive's Localize for Market skill follows these steps and never redraws the product.
