Most e-commerce brands searching for a Facebook Ad Library alternative don't need one yet. Meta's library is free and shows every ad currently running on Facebook and Instagram, which covers the weekly job of checking what a competitor is pushing. A paid ad spy tool earns its fee when you need three things Meta won't give you for an ordinary US ad: history after the ad stops, a place to save and tag what you find, and a signal for which ads are working.
What Meta's Ad Library shows, and what it leaves out
Meta's Ad Library is a free search over every ad currently running across Meta's apps. Type a brand or keyword, choose a country, and you see the creatives that advertiser has live today. Each new ad appears within 24 hours of its first impression. For a quick look at a competitor's current offer, nothing on this list beats it.

The gap: history, spend and reach
The limits sit in Meta's own Help Center table. For an active ad that isn't about social issues, elections or politics and never delivers an impression to the EU, the answer is No for archival, amount spent, impression ranges and total reach, and the only date shown is the day it started [1]. So when a US competitor pauses the ad you were studying, it is gone, and you never learned how many people it reached or what it cost.
| What you see | Ordinary ad, no EU or UK delivery | Political or social issue ad | Ad delivered to the EU or UK |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creative and Page | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Dates the ad ran | Start date only | Yes | Yes |
| Archived after it stops | No | 7 years | 1 year after last impression |
| Amount spent | No | Yes | No |
| Total reach | No | No, except some Brazil ads | Yes |
| Targeting selections | No | Page-level aggregate | Ad-level location, age, gender |
The last column is the useful loophole. If a competitor also sells in Europe, set the library's country to an EU market: those ads stay searchable for a year after their last impression, with reach and ad-level targeting attached. Logged-in users can also download Ad Library searches, which is a crude but free way to keep a record.
When a paid ad spy tool earns its fee
Pay for an ad spy tool when your research has to outlive the ad. Browsing what is live is free and Meta does it well. The paid tools sell memory, organization and a rough read on performance.
Three signs you've outgrown the free library
- You keep losing ads. A competitor's best creative goes inactive and the link in your team chat now leads nowhere. Every paid tool here stores its own copy when you save.
- Inspiration lives in screenshots. Boards, tags, comments and briefs are where Foreplay, Atria and Swipekit spend most of their feature lists.
- You want a signal, not a gallery. Run time is the closest public proxy for an ad that works, since brands rarely keep paying for a loser. Meta gives you a start date; Atria lets you sort by longest-running ads.
Why the research step matters at all
Creative still carries most of the weight. Nielsen's 2006 Project Apollo study found that 65% of a brand's sales lift from advertising came from the creative [2], and Kantar's later analysis concluded that the most creative and effective ads generate more than four times as much profit [3]. Neither number proves a spy tool will improve your ads; they show that time spent studying creative goes to the biggest lever.
The alternatives, sorted by what they're for
Ad library tools split into three jobs: saving and organizing ads (Foreplay, Swipekit, Atria), searching across networks (BigSpy, AdLibrary.com, Minea), and analyzing your own results with inspiration on the side (Motion). One familiar name is missing on purpose: MagicBrief shut down on July 31, 2026, and its team joined Canva.

Pricing side by side, as of October 2026
Entry prices run from free to $750 a month, but the sticker price is the least useful column once a team is involved. Seats and billing periods move the ranking more than the headline number.
| Entry plan | Free option | Built for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Ad Library | Free | Free | Checking live ads |
| Swipekit | $26/mo Basic, 5 seats | 14-day trial, no card | Team swipe file |
| AdLibrary.com | €29/mo Starter, 50 credits | Free Mode with cooldown | Cross-network search |
| Minea | $49/mo Starter ($39 quarterly) | Free registration | Product research |
| Foreplay | $59/mo Basic ($49 annual), 1 user | 7-day trial, card required | Swipe file and briefs |
| BigSpy | $69/mo Starter, 1 seat | Advertised, limits unpublished | Multi-network spying |
| Atria | $129/mo Core billed annually, 5 seats | Free start, 1,000 credits | Inspiration plus AI ideation |
| Motion | $750/mo Starter, unlimited seats | Trial, no card | Analytics on your own ads |
Price per seat changes the order
Foreplay Basic covers one user, with $20 for each additional user. A five-person team on Basic pays $59 plus $80, or $139 a month. The $175 Workflow plan includes 5 users, so the extra $36 buys Spyder and Lens. Swipekit Basic includes 5 seats at $26, and Atria Core includes 5 at $129 billed annually. Motion sits outside this math entirely: unlimited seats, priced by your own ad spend instead.
Foreplay's $49 and Atria's $129 are annual rates shown per month, Minea's $39 needs quarterly billing, and AdLibrary.com charges in euros with auto-charge on by default. Compare monthly against monthly, or you will pick the tool with the best-looking discount.
After the research: making the ad yours
An ad library tells you what to make. It does not make it, and the saved ad usually stalls at the next step: a brief, a shoot, a designer's queue.
Kive works at that step and nowhere earlier. Its Ideas feed holds ready-made product photos, looks and ads, with an Ads filter for images that carry text, like posters and social ads. Pick one with a layout close to what you saved, choose Make this ad yours, add your product, and Agent rebuilds it around your product while keeping the original's composition and lighting (how Ideas work). Ideas ads can carry placeholder brand names and prices, so ask Agent to swap in your own copy. The ideas are royalty-free for commercial use; whatever you add, such as a logo or text, is your responsibility.
Who it fits, and who it doesn't
It fits a brand that has found an ad structure it likes and needs a version with its own product without booking a shoot. The full workflow is in how to recreate an ad with your own product, and the same idea works for swapping your product into an existing photo.
It does not fit anyone whose question is what competitors spend or how long their ads run. Kive has no competitor tracking, no spend or impression data and no search over Meta or TikTok libraries, so it pairs with a tool from this list rather than replacing one. Ideas is still rolling out, so not every workspace has it yet, and remixes use credits: the free plan includes 40 after email verification, and Basic is $20/month for 1,000.
Which one to pick
Before paying for anything, run the trial against a real task: save every ad from three competitors for a week, then try to find a specific one again. The tool that makes that retrieval easy is the one your team will still open in month three.
What you do with the saved ads matters more than where you keep them. For still ads, keeping campaign visuals consistent across a brand kit is the next problem; for moving formats, the AI video ad generator comparison and our guide to product videos for TikTok and Meta ads pick up from there.
