The standard advice for DIY product photography is sound and worth repeating: put the product near a north-facing window, place a white foam board on the shadow side to bounce light back, and shoot. It costs almost nothing and beats most sub-$200 lighting kits. It also runs into a wall that has nothing to do with how well you execute it – the window is different tomorrow, and your product grid is not.
Why window light works
Shadow softness comes from how large the source appears from the product's point of view. A window a metre from a lipstick is enormous relative to that lipstick, so the shadow fades over a wide, forgiving band rather than snapping to a hard edge. That is the same physical property a photographer pays for in a softbox, available free in most rooms.
The foam board is doing real work
Light falls off fast, so the side of the product facing away from the window goes dark quickly. A white board opposite the window returns some of that light and recovers the detail. The move most people miss is the reverse: turn a black board towards the product and you subtract light instead, deepening the shadow edge and giving a pale product a defined outline against a pale background.
Two boards, one white and one black, cover most small-product briefs. There is nothing naive about this setup – it is the same logic as a studio, at a smaller budget.
The wall DIY runs into
Every problem with the window-and-board method is a consistency problem. The light is different at 9am and 4pm. It is different in November than in June. A cloud passes and your colour temperature moves mid-session.
Where it shows up
None of that matters for one shot. It matters enormously for a grid, because a product page displays twenty images side by side and the eye compares them whether the shopper means to or not. Shoot ten products on Tuesday and ten more three weeks later, and the second batch sits next to the first looking subtly wrong – slightly cooler, shadows falling at a different angle, backgrounds a different shade of white.
The second wall is volume. Styling, shooting, culling and editing one product properly takes real time. Multiply by two hundred SKUs and the method does not scale, no matter how good you have become at it.
What an AI studio changes
An AI studio addresses the repeatability half specifically. The scene – lighting direction, source size, framing, environment – is stored once as a preset and reapplied, so the fortieth product inherits the same setup as the first rather than depending on the weather. Choosing by catalogue size, not by budget
While the whole catalogue can still be shot in a session or two, stay with the window. The DIY advice circulating online is right about the physics and quiet about the arithmetic. It tells you how to get one good photograph, which is a solved problem, and stops before the part where you need two hundred of them to agree with each other.
