Apparel product photography has one job the rest of e-commerce photography does not: making a shopper confident about fit from a picture of a flat object. Every apparel listing picks from the same three presentations, and treating them as interchangeable is the most common mistake in the category.
What each one answers
A flat lay answers construction and colour. Everything is visible at once, nothing is foreshortened, and the eye can read seams, ribbing and hardware without interpretation. The hero at the top of this article is that treatment – a bomber laid out from above, zip and cuff ribbing legible.
A suspended shot answers drape. The garment hangs under its own weight, and the fabric either falls or it does not. That single property separates a stiff cotton from a fluid viscose better than any description in the product copy.
An on-model frame answers fit and scale. It is the only presentation that tells a shopper where a hem lands, and it is the one flat imagery cannot fake.

Lighting fabric without lying about it
Fabric is the least forgiving subject in product photography because it carries two properties at once: a texture that needs light to be visible, and a surface that shows every handling mark under the same light.
The narrow band that works
Hard light rakes across a weave and reveals its structure beautifully. It also turns a fold from packing into what looks like damage, and on a pale garment it converts every crease into a dark line.
Fully flat light solves the crease problem and creates a worse one: cotton, linen and viscose all start to look like the same material. Weave disappears, seams flatten, and the garment reads as a rendering.
The usable range sits between – broad enough to keep creases soft, directional enough that a seam still casts a small shadow. The trench below is at the harder end of that band, which suits a structured cotton and would be unkind to a silk.
Colour, and why apparel gets punished for it
Dyed fabric shifts under coloured light more visibly than printed packaging does, and clothing is bought by people who will hold the garment next to the screen they bought it from.
That makes warm-shifted staging a specific hazard in this category. A scene that pushes everything golden is flattering and, on a navy or a grey, actively misleading. The second trap is the ground, and it is not the one people expect. A strong coloured surface bounces into the shadows, under a hem or inside a sleeve, and on a well-lit garment that is usually where it stays. The cost is attention: on a busy floor the eye stops reading the fabric and starts reading the room.
Holding a collection together
A collection is displayed as a grid, and the grid is unforgiving about production differences. Two garments shot on different grounds read as two brands, no matter how good each frame is alone.

Fashn.ai is the one to beat when the garment itself must survive: it is built around try-on rather than generation, which is why seams and prints hold.
